JAMISON, the legendary
dancer, was astonished at the verve and vitality of the 11
energizing Evidence dancers as they leapt and twirled to the
reverberating music of Grace (1999).
This was only one of several astounding
pieces that the extraordinary Evidence Dance Company, presented at
its 25th anniversary celebration at The Plaza. The event
garnered $500,000 for the company.
"Just moving feels so good!" exclaimed
Jamison, director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. "Get on
down there!"
Ronald K. Brown, who founded the
company and is its artistic director, vaulted onstage and performed
a solo turn in a passionate tribute to his major supporter, board
chairman Reginald Van Lee.
Three hundred guests sprang to their feet
in a standing ovation, including such ardent fans as board vice
chair Joyce Mullins-Jackson, Uptown magazine publisher
Jocelyn Taylor, artist Victor Matthews, green energy
consultant Alexandra Stanton.
Billed as a Silver Ball, most guests came
with a twist of silver on attire.
Deepa Pakianathan, who works in
venture capital in San Francisco, outdid everyone. She was gorgeous
in a Blue Marine runway designed by Anna Molinari. "I came
because I like dance," she said.
Rhonda Ross, daughter of the great
Diana Ross, looked stunning in a B. Michael number. She was
radiant, having given birth last year to her first, a boy named
Michael. She’s a singer/actor who also owns a brokerage firm,
Boss Realty.
Highlight of the enchanting evening was an
electric performance by Jennifer Holliday just the way she
did when she starred in Michael Bennett’s Dreamgirls
on Broadway which earned her a Tony Award.
