BARNARD COLLEGE Toddler Center Grows Just Like The Children Story and Photos by Tim Boxer ATRICIA HENDERSON SHIMM, associate director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development, said the center has been her home since 1972, when she founded the center. It is an integral of the Barnard Psychology Department. “At first no one came,” she said. “I stood on corners and asked anyone with a toddler to come. Since then I have made many friends among the parents and students – and toddlers.” Shimm was guest of honor at Barnard’s spring gala and auction at Pier 60/ Chelsea Piers, emceed by ABC News correspondent Juju Chang. Trustees Jolyne Caruso-FitzGerald, Merryl Tisch and Diana Vagelos co-chaired the gala which also honored Cheryl Glicker Milstein, a 1982 graduate and a trustee since 1999. Among the 650 alumnae and friends who attended the dinner, which raised $2.1 million, were Columbia University president Lee Bollinger, Columbia College dean Austin Quigley, Matthew and Stacey Bronfman, Harvey Krueger, American Express chairman Kenneth and Kathy Chenault, Chelsea Piers owners Tom and Andi Bernstein, Bank of New York president Gerald and Agnes Hassell, COSMOGirl founding editor Atoosa Rubenstein, Dustin Hoffman’s daughter Becky Hoffman, and photographer Annie Leibovitz whose daughter Sarah, 5, is a graduate of the Toddler Center. |
