The Backwaters Of Kerala
RECENT trip to India brought me to
the beautiful state of Kerala, on the southwest coast. I
explored the backwaters which I found fascinating. The
backwaters form a chain of lagoons and lakes fed by fresh
water from the rivers and sea water from the Arabian Sea.
The winding canals are lined with villages. Many of these
villages are accessible only boat.
The Kerala backwaters
is home to quite a few houseboats. Each houseboat (kettuvallam,
"boat with knots") is individually constructed and
decorated. More than 2,000 kettuvallams serve as home to
much of the local population.
To sleep in this
distinctive houseboat, under a firmament of stars is pure
enchantment, says Lonely Planet.
