Richard Joel Makes
Auspicious Debut
Story and Photos by Tim Boxer
N
his first fundraising dinner as Yeshiva University’s new
president, Richard Joel was rewarded with $250,000 for the
Torah Chesed Fund to provide stipends to needy students.
Dina Pinczower, national board
chairman of YU Women’s Organization, offered the check at the
group’s 21st annual opera gala at Lincoln Center. The dinner for
540 guests was held in the New York State Theater’s grand
promenade following a performance of Puccini’s Turandot.
Alluding to the opera’s plotline, Joel said
he too gets three chances to solve any riddle in his new office
– “and if I fail I get my head chopped off just like in Turandot.”
Joel honored vice president Beatrice
Peyser, Toby Schneier and clothing designer Jodi Weisleder.
He praised Toby who, with husband Rabbi Marc
Schneier, co-founded the esteemed Hamptons Synagogue as “an
ardent active tanning-inducing synagogue.”
