Ahnold Be Warned—
Beware The Sermonator
Story and Photos by Tim Boxer
URING
the invocation at the annual dinner of the Jewish Community
Relations Council of New York, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik of
Congregation Mount Sinai in Brooklyn Heights revealed that his
congregants call him The Sermonator.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg told the dinner
guests at The Plaza of his recent visit to Israel. Former Mayor Ed
Koch accompanied him to Israel and regaled everyone with
accounts of a previous trip when he was hit on the head by a rock.
“It was one of the highlights of his
career,” Bloomberg chuckled.
JCRC president Ezra
G. Levin presented Rebuilders of New York Awards to Con Edison,
Verizon, Lehman Brothers managing director Ruth Horowitz and
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly to the applause of such
guests as pr exec Howard Rubenstein, UJA-Federation chief John
Ruskay, Floyd Abrams, AIPAC head Bernice Manocherian,
Baruch College president Ned Regan, Barnard College president
Judith Shapiro, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Stephan Hammerman
among many others.
“Everybody really does love Raymond,”
Bloomberg said.
The top cop said the war on terrorists
continues, adding, “The victims of hate crimes should know that
such crimes will be met with the full force of the police
department.”
New York Stock Exchange president/ceo Dick
Grasso, under continued fire for salary payouts, was unflappable
as he presented the corporate awards.
“We
would not have heard the opening bell again on Sept. 17 without the
wonderful efforts of Con Edison and Verizon,” said the embattled
chief of the big board.
JCRC, expertly managed by executive vice
president Michael Miller, represents some 60 organizations
under a single umbrella to protect Jewish interests and reach out to
the entire community in harmony.
My Nina told Bloomberg: “Mayor
Michael, I want to let you know you’re doing a phenomenal job.”
“You’re the only one who thinks so,”
Bloomberg responded, “you and my mother.”
