It’s Shock and
Awe As
They Go Crazy for Treacy

ASHIONABLE
Hollywood and London met at the crossroads – indeed the nexus –
Bergdorf Goodman for a crazy hat party the likes of which even Ascot
hasn’t seen.
One of our favorite
post-debs Cornelia Guest and our favorite old shoppe
Bergdorf- Goodman hosted a cocktail soiree for Cornelia’s favorite
milliner, the young Irish lad Phillip Treacy, who has become
the toast of the London and New York swell set.
From supermodel Iman to
artist Helen Schifter to socialite Ghislaine
Maxwell, Treacy left no head uncovered.
Most of the ladies – and
some of the men – flaunted his fabulous chapeaux fantastiques.
Doubles’ Wendy Carduna
was iridescent in irises, Leslie Saliba sported a flurry of
butterflies, and Erin O’Connor went Warholesque in a silk
screened cap inspired by the late great who promised everyone their
“15 Minutes of fame.”
Elton John’s long
time partner David Furnish was not shocked as he’d “seen
Elton in even wilder chapeaux.” Model/designer Jolynn was
clearly ready for a date with Prof. Higgins at Ascot with her
oversized white straw trimmed in black.
Cornelia was ready for the
tropics. Mom C.Z. Guest eschewed the chance to doff the
feathery frolics Treacy creates, but looked marvelous, nonetheless.
Celebrity stylist Phillip
Bloch, who (with the help of this writer) brought big diamonds
to the Oscar red carpet, was on the lookout for some “entrance
making statements.”
Robert Verde, who
spends most of his time re-doing drab flats and turning them into House
& Garden showpieces for Surprise by Design, was
clearly watching with an eye towards what we’ll see on the runways
for Spring 2004 Fashion Week in September. Verde, as you know,
covers the fashion shows 24/7 for Metro Channel’s Full Frontal
Fashion.
Treacy was officially
launched with a twisted bird cage hat worn by Linda Evangalista
and shot by Patrick Demarchielier for the cover of British
Vogue. He was subsequently named Designer of the Year by the
British Fashion Council.
Ten years later, he is the
crowning glory of the empire with a huge following throughout Europe
& America.
Also sipping Champagne on
B-G’s second floor were Emilia Fanjul, Lucy Sykes,
Tony award winning costume designer William Ivey Long, Amy
Fine Collins and designing duo Mark Badgley and James
Mischka.
Little wonder Treacy drew
such an eclectic crowd of socialites, rockers, fashionistas and
savvy investors looking for the next Yves St. Laurent!
Hats off - oops – on for
you, Mr. Treacy!!
