Hampton Shul Sheds Pool
To Add Another Center

HE
Hampton Synagogue started out as a shul with a pool – now look at
us!” Fred Schwalbe declared enthusiastically. The
congregation in Westhampton Beach, Long Island, came together to
dedicate yet another building on its growing campus where there’s
no room for a pool.
The new building is the Kaylie Center, with a
well-stocked library, comfortable study hall and a generous
reception area for Shabbat kiddush. It was established by Harvey
and Gloria Kaylie in memory of her mother, Lorrraine White,
while the library was named in memory of his grandfather, Sam
Aronowitz.
Ruth and Fred Schwalbe, whom
Rabbi Marc Schneier praised as “the original founders of
our synagogue,” hosted a dinner dance under a mammoth tent at
their magnificent palatial estate. (Ruth is the daughter of
Manhattan real estate mogul John Klein.)
The grounds were so vast that two golf carts
ferried guests from the entrance gate to the tent.
“I can’t believe the turnout this
evening!” dinner chair Harvey Greenfield exclaimed. “We
raised $825,000.”
That was not the end of fund-raising. Kaylie
announced a donation of $50,000 toward the One Family fund “to
help our brothers and sister in Israel who survived the killings and
bombings.”
Rabbi Schneier called on his congregants to be
the first synagogue to respond to this campaign, and asked for
matching money.
In the time it took to make hamotzi,
Schneier collected an additional $50,000 from 28 people who pledged
$1,800 each.
