PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
Zubin Mehta
Teams Up
With Itzhak Perlman
ONDUCTOR
Zubin Mehta and violinist Itzhak Perlman hadn’t
shared the stage in 13 years, so when the two collaborated this
winter in a concert with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at
Carnegie Hall, Mehta called it “a bar mitzvah of absences.”
“Itzhak and I used to
play 30 concerts in New York,” Zubin said. “I can’t tell you
how pleased I was to see him today.”
Cellist Baruch Gross
told me how proud he was to be able to play as a religious Jew.
One of three observant members of the orchestra, he stood out with
his brilliant white beard and black yarmulke.
He came to Israel 30
years ago from Ukraine, and was invited to join the IPO the very
next year.
Following the
performance, Lily Safra presided over a dinner for the
American Friends of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at the Plaza
Hotel. Board chairwoman Lynn Syms announced that the
evening raised $2 million.
