than 240 architects, designers, engineers and builders packed an
Israel Bonds luncheon to honor urban designer Marilyn Jordan
Taylor. The event at the St. Regis in New York topped $3.8 million in
bond sales.
Taylor, whose firm of
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is designing the new Penn Station,
told us of her love affair with Israel.
“Eight years ago my
partners and I decided we’d work on a new terminal at Ben-Gurion
Airport.”
The current turmoil
delayed the terminal’s opening last year. Taylor expects the
opening to be held next year.
“Ben-Gurion will be the
world’s first stone airport,” she said. “As you come into
the terminal you will come into a garden.”
Israeli Consul General
Alon Pinkas noted the number of times Israel struck out trying to
reach a settlement with Palestinians.
“We’ve negotiated
more cease fires than Roger Clemens has wins,” he remarked,
alluding the New York Yankees pitcher who became only the 21st
pitcher in history to win 300 games.
“We’ve been
experiencing little 9/11’s every day for almost three years,”
he added.
