VEN
as a youngster, Stewart Lane, producer of the Tony
Award-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie and co-owner
of the Palace Theater, showed great promise as an enterprising
businessman.
His
sister, Arlene Lane Fisher, revealed at a Jewish National
Fund dinner at the Marriott Marquis, how she and her brother used to
sell lemonade as youngsters.
“When
our parents got one of the first air conditioners in the
neighborhood, Stewart rented space in our apartment so the kids
could enjoy their lemonade in cool comfort.
“And
he charged them for reading his comic books!” she added.
“It
was 10 cents to read with an option to buy after three pages,”
Stewart said.
That
broke up a celebrity crowd that included actor Kevin Dobson, Kim
Zimmer (Reva on The Guiding Light), Louise Sorel (Days
of Our Lives), Isabelle Stevenson, head of the American
Theater Wing, Stewart’s wife Bonnie Comley, Dr. Ruth
Westheimer and Wall St. trader Sid Belzberg who, along
with Stewart, were the JNF guests of honor.
Stewart’s
daughter Leah was thrilled to meet Dr. Ruth. “We’re both
the same height!” she exclaimed.
