Sonesta A Work Of Art
In Sunny Isles Beach

HEN you arrive at Trump International Sonesta Beach Resort, a 32-story gem that lies in Sunny Isles Beach, just north of Miami Beach, you come into a decorative world of beauty. The walls are adorned with spectacular works by well-known and emerging contemporary artists.

Joan Sonnabend, wife of Sonesta chairman/CEO Roger Sonnabend, has spent more than three decades curating a collection of about 1,000 pieces. They are on exhibit at all 26 upscale Sonesta properties in the U.S., Brazil, Peru, St. Maarten, Egypt and St. Lucia.

Pick up a walking guide of the collection and enjoy a self-guided tour of Sonnabend’s world of art.

The Trump Sonesta is at 18001 Collins Ave., Sunny Isles Beach, Florida 33160. Toll free 800-766-3782. www.trumpsonesta.com.

This places the resort 17 miles from both the Ft. Lauderdale and Miami International Airports. Nearby are the affluent communities of Golden Beach, Bal Harbour and Aventura with world-class shopping venues of Bal Harbour Shops and Aventura Mall, Surfside Shops and Sawgrass Mills Outlet Mall.

There are lots to do and enjoy at the resort. For young guests ages 5 to 12 there is the Just Us Kids Program, supervised by trained counselors. For the rest of us there is the grotto-style pool complex with waterfalls and whirlpools, as well as 25 air-conditioned cabanas, the Atlantic Ocean beach, and water sports that include jet skis, catamarans, wind surfing and kayaks.

And then there are the Everglades. We took an airboat ride to explore a part of Florida we’d never seen before – alligator territory. If you want to discover crocs and other exotic creatures in the wilderness of Everglades National Park, book a unique airboat ride with Everglades Safari Park Eco-Adventure Tours at 305-226-6923 or visit www.evsafaripark.com.

Travel Guides

Israel & the Palestinian Territories (Lonely Planet, 448 pages, $21.99 Amazon.com Price: $14.95 ) is the first guide we’ve seen for the entire Holy Land, the ancient/modern Jewish state and the Moslem area. It is an excellent source of information, especially on the territories. The section on Gaza is quite detailed with instructions on how to engage the checkpoints and how to gain entry – although we don’t know why anyone would want to (unless you got a million dollar advance to write a book).

Lonely Planet Phrasebooks: Hebrew (270 pages, Amazon.com Price: $8.99 ) will make you a Hebrew speaking tourist in no time. Besides learning the requisite phrases to get by, you will also learn much about the society and its history. The pages on food also offers a lesson on what makes it kosher. Phrases for shopping will also tell you how to bargain. You’ll also get useful phrases that will come in handy only in Israel. On the bus you’ll encounter young men and women in uniform carrying machine guns. If a rifle blocks your path don’t be afraid to say (in Hebrew): "Pardon me, could you move the gun?"

Central Europe (Lonely Planet, 644 pages, $28.99 Amazon.com Price: $19.13 ) is a comprehensive guide to the most interesting parts of Europe: Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. Beside the most essential tourist information of each country and its major centers, the authors also a directory of services containing Internet resources, Gay & Lesbian Travelers, Itineraries, Dangers & Annoyances, Disabled Travelers, Solo Travelers, Women Travelers.

Small Talk: Eastern Europe (Lonely Planet, 127 pages, Amazon.com Price: $6.99 ) is a very handy booklet that fits neatly in your top pocket or handbag, and will prove of inestimable value in speaking common phrases in Albanian, Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Hungarian, Macedonian, Polish, Russian, Slovak and Slovene. It shows you how to pronounce properly and make conversation easily.
