SoBRO Barry Milea Hosts Party For South Bronx Boosters Story by Edward T. Callaghan Photos by John Wegorzewski RUCKING magnate Barry Milea and wife Sang hosted a lavish cocktail party that sprawled over two floors of the couple’s historic Gracie Square townhouse in New York. The fete saluted the committees, honorees and sponsors of the 33rd annual SoBRO gala. SoBRO (South Bronx Overall Development Corporation) has been revitalizing the South Bronx by bringing new business and constructing affordable housing. For Milea, the SoBRO involvement is the continuation of a family tradition. His father Joseph served on the board as does Barry now. The organization will honor Barry with a special award along with Citibank’s Mark Jahr and noted educator Dr. Carolyn G. Williams, president of Bronx Community College. Scores of the couple’s friends streamed through the wrought iron gates to get a first peek at the restoration of the four-story manse. Beaming like proud parents, they gave numerous tours up the graceful winding staircases through the beautifully appointed art-filled rooms. Board chairman Simon Bergson and Ann and Phillip Morrow, SoBRO president, toasted the philanthropic couple. On hand to support SoBRO’s work were LaVerne Perry-Kennedy with her husband Robert, past honoree Anthony Riccio, Caroline Winston, Neil and Ruth Parriser, Carol White, Stavros Michailidis, David Kistner and Kathy Jones. Chris Norwood, founder of Health People, was excited about her nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize for her work with women and children affected by HIV/AIDS. |
