DRESS FOR SUCCESS

ND dress they did – to the designer nines and beyond. Dress For Success – an international foundation, which has aided more than 200,000 New York women dress for their first interviews – goes to the heart of career women.

"Every successful businesswoman can relate to the need to feel fantastic to make that critical first impression," L. Marilyn Crawford, chairwoman for the evening and a marketing guru, told the 650 attendees at the New York Marriott Marquis..

Harry Belafonte, still one of the handsomest men on the planet, gave the most moving speech about empowerment and the responsibility we all bear to advance all mankind, as he accepted his well-deserved Humanitarian Award.

Richard Srednicki, CEO of Chase Card Services, was the corporate honoree because of his dedication to the program.

Star Jones Reynolds and Jackee whipped the crowd into a bidding frenzy, including a "priceless" luncheon with Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Waldorf-Astoria executive chef John Doherty.

Denise Rich, Lorraine Bracco, Wyclef Jean, Russell and Kimora Lee Simons, Roberta Flack and Zang Toi were among the star-studded crowd. FedEx Corporation, dressbarn and Shleppers Moving & Storage were major underwriters.

This April in Paris gala was a real passport to a Parisian fantasy.

Glorious Music

HE 22nd annual gala for the New York Pops was celebrated by 2x2 at Carnegie Hall, which was alive with the sound of music. How those rafters rang with the glorious voices of Heather Headley, Fantasia, Sutton Foster, Maureen McGovern and Michele Lee!

Record legend Clive Davis was honored, and so was all the glorious music he masterminded through the years.

TV’s most respected newscaster Walter Cronkite led the band, and columnist Liz Smith kept the program moving sharply.

New York City’s public schoolchildren joined conductor and founder Skitch Henderson onstage. After the music faded, the party resumed at the Athletic Club, where Mrs. Samuel J. LeFrak and her family were recognized for their philanthropic generosity.

The Young Friends of the Pops held a fun party at Frederick’s. Headed by Ivanka Trump and Bingo Gubelmann, their friends Tinsley Mortimer, Zani Gugelman, Catherine Forbes, Nicole Basabe, Joselyn Wohl and Rebecca Silver were among the revelers.

Getting Involved

HE Jed Foundation held its fourth annual gala at Zankel Hall in Carnegie Hall headlined by pianist Emanuel Ax. The group raises money for college students and teachers on the critical issue of suicide. Wyeth, a major advocate for suicide prevention in young adults, was a major sponsor of the evening.

Dr. Martin Keller, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown Medical School, received the Voice of Mental Health Award, presented by Dr. Robert Hirschfeld.

Patrick Kennedy, a youthful and powerful Congressional supporter of mental health initiatives for troubled young people, touched and moved his audience with powerful entreaties.

ABC-TV senior correspondent Bob Woodruff, just back from North Korea, was an eloquent M.C. for this touching subject. And the ubiquitous Dr. Ruth Westheimer entreated everyone to spot the early signs of trouble in young people and to get involved. Emanuel Ax’s performance was a fitting musical tribute to loved ones lost too soon.
