ALZHEIMER'S ASSOCIATION Frolicking Under Big Top In Memory Of Rita Haworth Story by Edward T. Callaghan Photos by Rob Rich ALA Chairwoman Nancy Corzine and her top-draw committee pulled out all stops for the 20th anniversary of the Alzheimer's Association Rita Hayworth Gala. Always one of New York's most glamorous events, this year's celebration, themed Beauty Under The Bigtop, delivered on its promise tenfold. As well, the fabulous fete raised over $1.7 million. The party draws a heady mix of Hollywood, New York society and royalty. This year's event with its internationally famed honorees doubled the stakes: Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, founder of the gala, named for her late mother, was honored with the Alzheimer's Association Lifetime Achievement Award and California's First Lady Maria Shriver was saluted with the Alzheimer's Association Awareness Award presented to her by Barbara Walters. The red carpet arrival area was a paparazzi's delight with a bejeweled, begowned and black-tied collection of the city's most fashionable. The atmosphere was filled with squeals of delight as friends reunited and traditional air kissing gave way to warm hugs. Pouring into the Waldorf-Astoria Grand Ballroom bedecked with a dreamy, surrealistic circus décor were Caroline Kennedy and husband Edward Schlossberg, Eunice Shriver, newlyweds Hilary Geary and Wilbur Ross, Cornelia and Marty Bregman, Joan Collins, Denise Rich, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, Joan Rivers, Donna Dixon Aykroyd, Peter Boyle, Margo and John Catsimatidis, Claudia Cohen, Somers and Jonathan Farkas. Also Deborah and Allen Grubman, Anne Hearst, Kimberly Rockefeller, Susan and John Hess, Deborah Norville and husband Dr. Karl Wellner, Prince Michael of Yugoslavia, Felicia Taylor, Dennis Basso, Michael Cominotto, Bryant and Hilary Gumbel, Nurit Kahane Haase, Michele and Larry Herbert, Andrea and John Stark, and Allison and Leonard Stern |
