Dina Pinczower, national board chairman of YU Women’s Organization, offered the check at the group’s 21st annual opera gala at Lincoln Center. The dinner for 540 guests was held in the New York State Theater’s grand promenade following a performance of Puccini’s Turandot. Alluding to the opera’s plotline, Joel said he too gets three chances to solve any riddle in his new office – “and if I fail I get my head chopped off just like in Turandot.” Joel honored vice president Beatrice Peyser, Toby Schneier and clothing designer Jodi Weisleder. He praised Toby who, with husband Rabbi Marc Schneier, co-founded the esteemed Hamptons Synagogue as “an ardent active tanning-inducing synagogue.” |
