92nd STREET Y
Live, From 92nd Street
It’s Funny Monday!

By Nina and Tim Boxer

HERE was a black hole in the comedy galaxy the third Monday in May, as all the stars seemed to gravitate to 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue. Richard Belzer, Freddie Roman, Sandra Bernhard and Joy Behar, among many other comics, headlined a program of Comedy Tonight at the 92nd Street Y’s annual gala benefit which raised $1.1 million.

“Everybody thinks I’m Jewish,” said Behar, star of ABC’s The View. “Actually my family’s from Calabria.”

Six months ago she got a phone call: “Happy Chanukah!”

“Ma, I’m not Jewish!” she exclaimed.

The Belz, now a popular TV star, did a right-on impression of a French Bob Dylan.

Also on the bill were Mario Cantone, Dean Edwards, Judy Gold, Gilbert Gottfried, Kevin Meaney, Colin Quinn, Sarah Silverman, and Triumph the Insult Dog, aka Robert Smigel.

Most were salacious with material that couldn’t be printed in a family newspaper.

The entertainment was taped (and edited) for broadcast to our armed forces in 177 countries and on ships across the globe, courtesy of Sen. Hillary Clinton and the U.S. Department of Defense.
