The event attracted Candace Krueger, the reigning Miss USA, romance cover queen Cindy Guyer, and theater critic Aubrey Reuben to Nino’s Ristorante on the Upper East Side, where Nino Selimaj played host to an SRO crowd of supporters. Bard, who has been presenting the awards for six years, mentioned that his mother, Sylvia, had breast cancer 27 years ago. “The key,” he said, “is early detection.” The three awardees were | Dr. Beryl McCormick, clinical director of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s department of radiation oncology. | | Dr. Violet Merle Mcintosh, chief of breast surgery services at Englewood Hospital. | | Dr. Carolyn D. Runowicz, director of the division of gynecologic oncology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, and a breast cancer survivor. | Dr. Baker is also a breast cancer survivor. In fact, Dr. Roses was her doctor. It’s important,” Dr. McCormick stressed, “that women see their doctors and screen their breasts. Of all the cancers out there, breast cancer is curable.” Dr. Roses summed up the occasion: “We are honoring people who are trying to cure disease, not spread it.” |
