WINDOWS ON THE WORLD
Rock and Wrap It Up
Before the Apocalypse

By POLLY VAN RAALTE

NE of the very last charity events held at the end of the social season in June, at Windows of the World, atop the World Trade Center, was the Rock and Wrap It Up benefit.

The organization is a volunteer food collection service. It works with the music industry to deliver unused food from concerts and industry events to the tables of families and individuals in need.

Syd Mandelbaum founded this anti-hunger crusade in 1994 in memory of his parents who used to tell stories of the starvation they endured in the Holocaust.

The evening, the first annual benefit, honored Leslie Leventman, executive vice president of creative services, special events and travel management at MTV Networks.

Tom Freston, chairman and ceo of MTV Networks, was thrilled to present the Lena and Joseph Mandelbaum Humanitarian Award to such a deserving woman.

Former U.S. Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman received the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Award from Abby Emerson Gilhooley, daughter of the late Bill Emerson.

Alicia Keys was a wonderful
treat at the benefit.

Bill was a Republican and Dan a Democrat. Even so, Abby said, their friendship was strong, and they worked together to help the hungry.

J Records artist Alicia Keys treated us to a great performance encompassing hi-hop, R&B and soul. She told me Prince and Clive Davis inspired her.
